Signs That the Computer Industry is Developing a Green Conscience

The computer industry in Silicon Valley and around the world is developing sophisticated power savers and hibernation modes.  Also the adoption of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) which represent a big savings over older less-efficient cathode ray tube (CRTs) technology is another sign that the high-tech sector is trying to at least have a green tinge.

Here are a few more signs that suggest that great green things are coming to technology land:

1.  Solar-Powered Workstations-Lenovo has a new PC that can actually be powered with a portable solar panel.

2.  Green Data Centers-over 55% of the data centers have already detailed strategies for improving the energy efficiency of their IT centers.

3.  USB 3.0-the two main goals of the new SuperSpeed USB are to boost the connectivity and data transfer rate and to dramatically reduce power consumption.

4.  Conservation Targets-Google, Intel, H.P., IBM, Yahoo and many others have all joined with the EPA and World Wildlife Fund to develop a goal of slashing the amount of energy computers consume. The Climate Savers Computing Initiative has the goal of reducing computer energy use by 90% by 2010.

5.  Carbon Neutral-Dell continues it’s green path goal by becoming the first major computer company to become carbon neutral.  That means reducing emissions, buying renewable power and offsetting other areas by a cooperative tree-planting program.

Hopefully these ideas will experience heartfelt follow-through.  The fast paced tech world will improve it’s image, reliability, save money and resources if it continues to move forward in protecting our fragile planet and shake its toxic, energy -hungry legacy.
