Eco Friendly Living Recycling Earth Friendly

ARSO?

So what does ARSO mean?   Here’s another eco-acronym that compliments “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.   ARSO is used by some in the environmental industry to help companies reduce and manage their carbon footprint.  It stands for Avoid, Reduce, Substitute and Offset.

For example a business can:

AVOID buying a large SUV for deliveries or avoid using non-recycle copy paper.

REDUCE their purchases of overly packaged items.

SUBSTITUTE biking for driving to work or using more enviro-friendly office supplies or machines.

OFFSET their environmental impact by purchasing carbon credits.

Signs That the Computer Industry is Developing a Green Conscience

The computer industry in Silicon Valley and around the world is developing sophisticated power savers and hibernation modes.  Also the adoption of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) which represent a big savings over older less-efficient cathode ray tube (CRTs) technology is another sign that the high-tech sector is trying to at least have a green tinge.

Here are a few more signs that suggest that great green things are coming to technology land:

1.  Solar-Powered Workstations-Lenovo has a new PC that can actually be powered with a portable solar panel.

2.  Green Data Centers-over 55% of the data centers have already detailed strategies for improving the energy efficiency of their IT centers.

3.  USB 3.0-the two main goals of the new SuperSpeed USB are to boost the connectivity and data transfer rate and to dramatically reduce power consumption.

4.  Conservation Targets-Google, Intel, H.P., IBM, Yahoo and many others have all joined with the EPA and World Wildlife Fund to develop a goal of slashing the amount of energy computers consume. The Climate Savers Computing Initiative has the goal of reducing computer energy use by 90% by 2010.

5.  Carbon Neutral-Dell continues it’s green path goal by becoming the first major computer company to become carbon neutral.  That means reducing emissions, buying renewable power and offsetting other areas by a cooperative tree-planting program.

Hopefully these ideas will experience heartfelt follow-through.  The fast paced tech world will improve it’s image, reliability, save money and resources if it continues to move forward in protecting our fragile planet and shake its toxic, energy -hungry legacy.

What if you could help someone less fortunate and eat a super dinner at the same time?  Many pay-what-you-can restaurants are opening up across the U.S.  These fun restaurants offer customers the chance to set the price for their meal based on what they can afford.  The thought is that someone more well off can offset a meal for someone in need.  One World Cafe in Salt Lake City serves their yummy organic cuisine cafeteria style to cut down on wasted food by letting diners chose their own portions sizes oneworldeverybodyeats  It’s owner is forming a nonprofit to help others set up similar restaurants.  A restaurant in Denver opened up recently opened called the Same Cafe.  Check out soallmayeat

Hiring An Appraiser for STUFF

If your granny has lots of stuff like my grandmother does, then you may have to hire an appraiser. Enlist a pro to determine whether something is valuable but also be careful because it will cost you. Some expert appraisers charge up to $300 an hour!

Here are a few tips:

1). Find a real specialist-to search for someone in your area.  If you have an old piano it makes sense to look for someone with a background in musical instruments.

2). Ask for a resume-also contact recent clients.

3). Ask about all fees up front-an appraiser may bill by the piece or by the hour.
4). Bring information-any paperwork such as letters, documentation, receipts or original packaging can help an appraiser with the history of the item and potentially it’s true value.
