What To Do With Old Medications?

For years, we just flushed them down the toilet and never thought twice but now such cities as Las Vegas and many others are finding traces of numerous drugs in their drinking water!  Antibiotics, hormones and mood stabilizers are tainting the drinking water supply of millions of Americans.

These medications also find their way into our nation’s waterways that support many species of fish and other wildlife.  What to do with old medications is a serious question.

*Don’t flush unused medicines.  We used to be instructed to do so but not anymore.  It could adversely affect the environment and your health.

*Crush solid medications and dissolve them in water:dilute liquid medication in water.  Then mix, the solution with kitty littler, sawdust or another material that a child or pet would be unlikely to get into.  Place it in a bag that you seal shut and put in the garbage.

*Get answers from your pharmacist.  Ask your drug store for more tips on proper disposal of prescription medications and whether your pharmacy accepts unused medications.  Sometimes, your state or town will have a collection day or program in place for unused medications or old prescriptions.

Our first local Farmer’s Market opened up last Saturday.  Even though the season is barely getting into the swing of things-we had a nice selection of berries, spinach, lettuce, fresh herbs, bread and cheese to pick from.

Here are a few simple reasons to buy local foods:

*Local food taste better and are fresher.
*Local food usually have less environmental impact
*Local foods preserve farmland and green space
*Local foods support your local economy
*Local foods create community – it connects you and your children
  with those that raise and
  grow your food.
*Local foods usually offer more variety
*Local foods are usually safer and more healthy.

Since local foods use less fuel to deliver better health and flavor, I’d say it is definitely helping our environment in a tasty way.  Aren’t you looking forward to the days of summer?

The Best and Healthiest Accessory of the Season-Sunglasses

If you are looking for a trendy new pair of sunglasses this summer – you will want to consider fit, shape, color, design but most of all high quality lenses.  The perfect shades of course look and feel terrific but also add a healthy dose of wellness and sun damage prevention.  Many medical experts believe macular degeneration and cataracts are caused by sun damage and unprotected eyes.

One premium lenses to consider is Varilux polarized with Crizal Sun lenses.  They offer 100% protection from UV rays.  Look for exceptional lenses that provide complete protection from UV rays along with clearer vision, reduced glare, sharper images and improved depth-perception.

Most designer frames can be outfitted with high quality lenses if you wish.  Many people try to prevent sun damage to their skin but do not take preventative measures where their eyes are involved.  For more sunwear tips visit mybestaccessory.

Non-toxic Nails

If you are beauty conscious but also health minded, nail polish has long posed a dilemma.  Just in time for sandal and flip flop weather a few good nail polishes are popping up like bright colored flowers.  These lacquers can spare you potentially toxic and carcinogenic ingredients.  I have found two that do not chip or look dull but still come in many beautiful shades.

At a New York organic spa called Priti   clients are raving about No Miss Polish ($6.50)  This nail polish comes in 150 beautiful long wearing colors.  These polishes are available online or at the spa and do not contain dibutylphihalate, formaldehyde or toluene which are the three main health and environmental offenders.

Also available in finer department stores or online is the Barielle line called Shades ($8.00).  Barielle has had a great nail care line for years and deserves a second look.
