If your granny has lots of stuff like my grandmother does, then you may have to hire an appraiser. Enlist a pro to determine whether something is valuable but also be careful because it will cost you. Some expert appraisers charge up to $300 an hour!

Here are a few tips:

1). Find a real specialist-to search for someone in your area.  If you have an old piano it makes sense to look for someone with a background in musical instruments.

2). Ask for a resume-also contact recent clients.

3). Ask about all fees up front-an appraiser may bill by the piece or by the hour.
4). Bring information-any paperwork such as letters, documentation, receipts or original packaging can help an appraiser with the history of the item and potentially it’s true value.
